CPR: BLS and ALS Instructor Certification Workshop

27 and 28 May, 2023

This session offers veterinary professionals certification as RECOVER CPR BLS and ALS Instructors, approved to certify veterinarians and veterinary technicians as RECOVER BLS and ALS Rescuers. Participants must have successfully completed the RECOVER BLS and ALS online courses and be RECOVER Certified Rescuers in BLS and ALS. Participants will learn how to run hands-on BLS certification workshops with CPR mannequins and how to deliver the standardized assessments to certify others as BLS Rescuers. Attendees will then learn to run a hands-on ALS workshop with a canine patient simulator running a series of CPR simulations, and ultimately a final “mega-code” simulation to certify ALS Rescuers.

CPR – BLS and ALS Rescuer Certification

28 May, 2023

How do we best treat animals in cardiopulmonary arrest? Evidence-based veterinary CPR guidelines published by the RECOVER Initiative in 2012 aimed at maximizing patient survival after cardiopulmonary arrest led to the official veterinary CPR certification process approved by the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care. This course will teach the concepts and techniques of RECOVER Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Life Support (ALS).

The certification process consists of an online course followed by onsite, hands-on training. Participants must have successfully completed the RECOVER online BLS and ALS courses (available at http://recoverinitiative.org or completed the courses previously offered by eCornell or Veritas). Successful completion of this course grants certification as a RECOVER BLS and ALS Rescuer. Human medical professionals certify in human CPR. Veterinary medical professionals should certify themselves in veterinary CPR!

Basic Life Support Certification
Participants will receive a review of core concepts in RECOVER BLS and have an opportunity to apply these concepts through scenarios using canine mannequins. Practice scenarios include single-rescuer BLS and two-rescuer BLS, with and without intubation. The session concludes with a practical assessment resulting in certification as a RECOVER Certified BLS Rescuer upon passing.

Advanced Life Support Certification
Participants will review core concepts in RECOVER ALS through scenario-based immersive simulation. The scenarios will provide the opportunity to apply concepts in patient monitoring, use of drugs, defibrillation, and the decision-making process of appropriate interventions during CPR. The session concludes with a team-based practical assessment resulting in certification as a RECOVER Certified ALS Rescuer upon passing."
